چکیده
Wage Distributions by Bargaining Regime: Linked Employer-Employee Data Evidence from Germany Using linked employer-employee data from the German Structure of Earnings Survey 2001, this paper provides a comprehensive picture of the wage structure in three wage-setting regimes prevalent in the German system of industrial relations. We analyze wage distributions for various labor market subgroups by means of kernel density estimation, variance decompositions, and individual and firm-level wage regressions. Unions' impact through collective and firm-level bargaining mainly works towards a higher wage level and reduced overall and residual wage dispersion. Yet observed effects are considerably heterogeneous across different labor market groups. There is no clear evidence for wage floors formed by collectively bargained low wage brackets which would operate as minimum wages for different groups of workers. JEL Classification: J31, J51, J52

Estimating the wage premium of collective wage contracts: Evidence from longitudinal linked employer-employee data
Using a large-scale linked-employer-employee data set from western Germany, this paper presents new evidence on the wage premium of collective bargaining contracts. In contrast to previous studies, we seek to assess the extent to which differences in wages between workers in covered and uncovered firms arise from the non-random selection of workers and firms into collective bargaining coverage....

Rising Wage Inequality, the Decline of Collective Bargaining, and the Gender Wage Gap This paper investigates the increase in wage inequality, the decline in collective bargaining, and the development of the gender wage gap in West Germany between 2001 and 2006. Based on detailed linked employer-employee data, we show that wage inequality is rising strongly – driven not only by real wage increa...
متن کاملAssessing the Impact of Employer Characteristics on Low-wage Mobility
This paper studies the importance of employer-specific determinants in escaping low earnings in Germany. To address the initial conditions problem and the endogeneity of employer retention, we model (intra-firm) low-pay transitions using a multivariate Probit model that accounts for selection into low-wage employment and non-random employer drop-out. Using data from the LIAB Linked Employer–Emp...
متن کاملThe One Constant: A Causal Effect of Collective Bargaining on Employment Growth? Evidence from German Linked-Employer- Employee Data
A large number of articles have analysed ‘the one constant ́ in the economic effects of trade unions, namely that union bargaining reduces employment growth by two to four percentage points per year. Evidence is, however, mostly related to AngloSaxon countries. We investigate whether a different institutional setting might lead to a different outcome, making the constant a variable entity. We us...
متن کاملBargaining Structure and Intra-Establishment Pay Inequality in four European Countries: Evidence from Matched Employer-Employee Data
This paper investigates the patterns of within establishment wage inequality in four European countries (Belgium, Ireland, Italy and Spain). Using matched employeremployee data (ESES) we analyse the effects of work organization practices, pay policies, bargaining procedures and industrial relations arrangements on the pattern of wage differentials in the firm. The main findings suggest that bot...
